CHAPTER EIGHT

Beulah was aroused from her sleep when Bo shook her and told her to wake up. It was morning already, and it was difficult to remember what was on her mind when she fell asleep; Beulah was sure it was something important. She sat up in the bed and stared at Bo. He was fully dressed and ready for school.

“Is it that late baby?” she said. “Oh my goodness, I done overslept. Lord let me throw something on and get you to the bus.”

“Why do we have to go to the bus stop Momma? To stand and wait on a bus that’s not going to come.”

“We got to,” she said. “The one morning we not out there is just the morning it just might come. That will give them all the more reason not to show up.”

“Let’s go,” she said. “We don’t want to make them wait. Lord what am I saying? If it was to come, it sho’ wouldn’t wait, and that’s the truth.”

“Oh, Lord,” she said. “You ain’t had nothing to eat.”

“Yes I did Momma. I didn’t want to wake you, so I went in the kitchen to pour a glass of orange juice. I got a piece of light bread too, and I put some jelly on it. I didn’t toast it because you told me not to mess with things.”

“That’s right,” she said. “Don’t mess with things.”

“But I want you to wake me, so I can get those things for you. Okay!” she said to him.

“Yes, ma’am,” Bo said.

As they walked to the bus stop, Beulah told him that she had a trying time last night, which accounted for why she overslept.

“What happen?” he asked.

“It’s nothing you need to worry yourself about. But that can’t happen again. I can’t imagine what Mr. B. would think of me if he knew I wasn’t getting you ready for school.”

“I don’t know what he will think,” Bo said. “But I saw him in the kitchen this morning when I was getting my orange juice. He poured it for me.”

“You mean he was up this morning? When you were getting ready for school?”

“Yes, ma’am,” Bo said.

Beulah was dumbfounded; now she would have to explain to Mr. Brossiere why she was still asleep. What would she say to him? That she was up late last night dreaming about her future. By now they were at the bus stop. They would wait a few more minutes before heading back to the house to perform their usual routine. But this time Beulah wasn’t worried because there was a letter to express her feelings. “To Whom It May Concern,” it said. That was so proper to Beulah. It sounded like something a president might say, but, it was words that appeared to have come from her very own mouth. They waited a little while longer and then made the short walk back to the house.

Clem was already up and ready for the morning ritual. He would have to make the drive and Mr. Brossiere would come along.
